About Us

Our History

Over 15 years ago we started out looking to offer Humane Education in school systems. We still dream of coming up with time to work on that. When Hurricane Katrina hit we saw the plight of the animals down South, and jumped in to help with animal rescue. That led to us starting a no-kill animal shelter, and ultimately ending up as a low-cost veterinary clinic.

Some of the conditions our clinic treats
  • Ear infections/hematomas
  • Eye infections
  • Upper respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Wounds and abscesses
  • Diarrhea
Some of the surgical procedures perfromed through Michigan Pet Surgery & Dentistry Clinic include
  • Tail amputations (except for screw tail)
  • Enucleations
  • Mass removals
  • Ear hematomas
  • Laceration repair
  • Dewclaw removal
  • Anal sacculectomies
  • Entropion repair
  • Cherry eye
  • Cystotomies (bladder stone removal)
  • “Unblocking” of male cats

We are located 10 minutes east of the Grand Rapids Ford airport, in a spacious house on 7 acres.  We blend high quality surgery with a peaceful country environment.  By operating this way we are able to keep costs affordable without compromising care.

Dr. Amy Pietras
Meet our vet

Dr. Amy Pietras

Dr. Amy is a CPA and has a Master’s degree in tax law.  She quit her job and went South 3 weeks after Hurricane Katrina landed, arriving in Baton Rouge just as Hurricane Rita hit.  She continued her journey to the outskirts of New Orleans to volunteer with a rescue group from Washington State.

Dr. Amy continued her rescue work, driving back and forth to Michigan with carloads of cats from various rescue organizations, and opened a shelter to adopt them.  Each trip included 1-2 weeks of work on the ground, including trapping and keeping food and water stations supplied.

She realized more shelter and spay/neuter veterinarians were needed, and ultimately landed in vet school.  She still maintains her CPA license and volunteers her time helping other nonprofits with their finances.

Our Vision

Our Vision is a society that values the life of each individual animal, and where animal care is affordable and accessible to all who need it.

Our Mission

Our Mission is to provide the highest quality care at the lowest possible price. Through our sister clinic, Michigan Pet Surgery & Dentistry Clinic, we also offer weekend appointments and affordable elective and urgent surgeries.

Education

Education is critical. The more we know, the better we can do. You’ll find our website packed with explanations, research, and even a Humane Education program with resources for parents and educators, and book lists for children of all ages. Click on our blog page for more information.

A Journey of Compassion

On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana.  At that time, Amy Pietras was a CPA.  She quit her job and headed South, joining animal rescuers from across the country.  This unexpected decision led to her opening a no-kill shelter in Grand Rapids, and dozens of trips to New Orleans to help in the years-long process of rebuilding the city and saving the lives of those left behind.  She collaborated with Pasado’s Safe Haven, Magazine Street Rescue, and ARNO (Animal Rescue New Orleans).  Amy transported and adopted out over 400 Katrina cats between 2005-2009.

It didn’t take long for her to realize the gap in care for ferals, strays, colony cats, and the beloved pets of low-income individuals.  She applied to veterinary school and graduated in late 2017.

Dr. Amy opened Quick Fix Veterinary Clinic in 2019 as a part-time spay/neuter resource.  Within a year she recognized other services owners needed, particularly dentistry and general wellness.  She worked for over a year in urgent care, and at a “procedure-only” surgery & dentistry clinic.  Since then, she has expanded services and added weekend appointments and elective, as well as urgent, surgeries through Michigan Pet Surgery & Dentistry Clinic (michiganpetsurgery.com).  In 2024 she performed over 5,500 surgeries, including enucleations, mass removals, infected uteruses (pyometras), bladder stone removals (cystotomies), foreign body removals, and more!

Our location

We are located on the East side of Grand Rapids, MI, on 7 acres in a large upper class residential house that has been partially converted. There’s a large outdoor pen for dogs to roam, and the home-like environment seems to keep patient’s stress level down. We have the same range of equipment as other full-time clinics with the exception of full body x-rays and ultrasound.
