Post-Op Instructions

Post-surgical Information

  • Food and water is fine.
    • We typically give small cats a small snack after waking up.
    • Cats receive an anti-nausea injection and typically resume
    • They may not be interested in food immediately after surgery, however they should have eaten within 24 hours of returning home.
    • We recommend feeding a ½ portion of food the night of surgery.  If they keep it down for an hour, you’re welcome to feed them more.
    • They will likely return to normal eating the day after surgery.
  • Anesthesia side effects!
    • Shaking, whining, and restlessness are normal side effects of the anesthesia drugs.
    • These symptoms typically disappear within 24 hours.
  • Pain medication was administered by injection today.
    • Don’t give additional pain medication or any over-the-counter pain medications unless directed to by a veterinarian.
    • Unless directed otherwise by your veterinarian, continue to give your pet any other medication it is on, per its usual schedule.
  • Male cats do not have sutures.

For the Next 10 Days

**Wear the e-collar!!  Most animals leave here with a free e-collar.  If it doesn’t fit, you can buy one at a local store, online through amazon, etc.**

  • Limit their activity
    • Leash walks only.
    • No running, jumping or climbing.
    • No baths or swimming
    • Indoor/outdoor animals should be kept in a clean and warm environment, and all pets should be watched carefully for at least 24 hours after surgery.
  • Check the incision twice daily, once in the morning and again at night.
    • Some swelling is normal.
    • Female cats may develop a seroma or suture reaction over the next week and a half. They usually resolve over time and don’t require treatment.
    • Occasionally males develop scrotal hematomas.  If this happens, put your cat in a small carrier/cage so they can’t move around much, so as to allow the blood to clot properly.
    • Prevent licking of the incision.   Female cats and dogs are sent home with an e-collar—and e-collars are available for males as well.  The smallest size e-collars (7.5) are too large for kittens.  Here is a link to a Youtube video on how to make e-collars out of paper plates for small kittens!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1A5tzFwRqk
    • The sutures used in the incision are dissolvable and don’t need to be removed.

The day of surgery

Animals may have a ½ meal before 6am, water is always fine to give.   Each cat should be in their own clean and secure carrier (or trap).  Carriers must be labeled on top with owner’s name, pet name, and owner phone number.  Place a small, flat towel or “pee pad” in them.  For those with dogs, please leave dogs in your car and come inside for check-in.  Owners must have a solid, non-retractable leash for dogs that are not in carriers.

In order to make drop-off safe and expedient, we allow only 1 adult per pet inside.

Inclement weather

Safety comes first!  If the roads aren’t safe to travel, we will put any payments you make into a client credit.  For cat spay/neuter appointments, simply bring your pet in as a walk-in on any of our future surgery dates.  A link to our google calendar is on our Schedule page.  For canine surgery and dental appointments you will need to contact us to reschedule.

If we are forced to close for any reason, we will post it on our Facebook page.
