Vaccines

Keep Your Pet Healthy—for Free!

Keeping your pet up to date on core vaccines is critical to their long-term health and welfare. Because of this, we have included some core vaccines in our spay/neuter package for over FIVE YEARS—that’s how much we want to protect your pets. Free boosters on weekend vaccine clinics are also available! We are partners with you on this journey, and we don’t want to just tell you what your pet needs, we want to teach you why it matters. Below, we’ve summarized the key points of vaccine research. At the bottom of the page we have provided a link to published vaccine research.

Cost of Veterinary Care

In March 2023, the Forbes Advisor put the average cost of a vet visit for a single vet to be $57.65 in Michigan. It also puts the cost of a dog’s core vaccine, DAPP, at $34.87, and the cat’s core vaccine, 3 in 1, at $29.29.

Vaccination Schedule Guidelines

According to the 2020 AAHA guidelines, cats and dogs should be getting these vaccines every 2-4 weeks starting as early as 5 weeks of age and continuing until at least 16 weeks of age, with a minimum of 2 rounds of shots required. The leptospirosis vaccine is also highly recommended for most dogs and comes in a combination vaccine called DHLPP—dogs need to be at least 9 weeks old to receive a lepto vaccine.

Importance of the DAPP Vaccine

Why is the DAPP vaccine so important? It protects against several viruses, including the very deadly parvovirus. Parvo can be treated successfully, but it can cost over $7,000 —it isn’t hard to find GoFundMe fundraisers for owners in this situation. Cats can contract a similar virus, panleukopenia, which the 3 in 1/HCP vaccine protects against. Research also shows if kittens do not receive booster shots past the age of 12 weeks, the disease is 51% fatal.

Feline Herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1)

Feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) is another very important upper respiratory virus. It is expected that almost all cats will be exposed to this during their lifetime. Typical signs include sneezing, congestion, conjunctivitis, and ocular and nasal discharge. Ocular symptoms left untreated often lead to ulcers, corneal perforation, and are the leading cause of enucleation in cats. Unvaccinated cats who acquire this virus have it for life, and will experience regular flare-ups and sickness requiring medical attention.

Why “Indoor-Only” Pets Aren’t Fully Protected

“Indoor-only” or “one-pet homes” will not protect animals from these viruses. One day, your pet will need to see a veterinarian, and it is unreasonable to expect veterinary clinics to be sterile environments. Transmission of some of these viruses can occur through fomites, including waiting room chairs, the floors, stethoscopes, etc.

How to Prevent These Diseases for Free

For over 3 years, #PetcoLove has provided free DAPP and 3 in 1/HCP vaccines to nonprofits to administer to the community. Quick Fix Veterinary Clinic is proud to be one of their vaccine partners.

Learn More About Vaccine Research

As part of pet owner education, we encourage you to read the research behind these findings if you have any questions.

Why are basic vaccines so important?

One of the most heart-breaking things we see are illnesses that could have easily, and cheaply, been prevented. More often than not I’m talking about parvovirus in puppies and calici/herpesvirus/panleukopenia in kittens.

Parvo, while it can be successfully treated ~90% of the time, it can cost $7,000+ to do it. Calici causes mouth ulcers in cats, and makes eating, drinking, and swallowing, painful. Herpes often causes severe eye infections that lead to horrifyingly painful ulcers, permanent vision damage, and is a LEADING CAUSE of enucleation (eye removal). Panleukopenia simply causes death, in 95%+ of cases.

IF you get your puppies/kittens vaccinated AND boostered per guidelines for the first few years of their lives, you can save yourself a significant amount of money, and them a lot of pain/trauma. If there’s anything we can instill in you…. Let. This. Be. It.

Please note: you must provide proof of a current, unexpired rabies vaccination at the time of service to receive a 3-yr rabies vaccine. Otherwise, by law, we can only give you a 1-yr vaccine.
